Green Colorado: Environmental Initiatives and Volunteer
 Vacations

Frosty morning at Echo Lake on the Mount Evans Highway

Colorado is Mother Nature's playground. With beautiful landscapes, pristine rivers, abundant wildlife and blue skies, Coloradans have long taken pride in the state's natural beauty. Visitors can get involved in caring for Colorado by supporting environmental initiatives at various resorts, hotel properties, attractions and restaurants and by participating in volunteer vacations. Here is what just a few Colorado companies are doing to help.

Hotels, resorts and attractions across the state are focused on being green from the ground up through the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification Program created by the U.S. Green Building Council. The new home of the Museum of Contemporary Art (www.mcartdenver.org) in Denver is the first contemporary art museum in the country to receive the gold level certification. In addition, a number of properties across the state are seeking or have been awarded LEED certification, including The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa in Avon (www.westinriverfront.com) and the Viceroy Hotel (www.korhotelgroup.com) in Snowmass. The Las Manos Bed & Breakfast (www.lasmanosbandb.com) in Buena Vista was recognized by ForbesTraveler.com as one of "America's 10 Greenest Hotels in 2007" and The Devil's Thumb Ranch (www.devilsthumbranch.com) outside of Winter Park was the only U.S. property to be included on Travel & Leisure's 2007 list of the "Top 20 Eco-Friendly Resorts in the World."

Resorts throughout Colorado are doing their part for the environment too. Through the purchase of wind power, Colorado Resorts are keeping more than 241 million pounds of carbon dioxide out of the Earth's atmosphere annually. A total of 11 resorts, including Aspen/Snowmass (www.aspensnowmass.com), Vail (www.vail.com) and Beaver Creek (www.beavercreek.com), use wind power to offset 100 percent of consumed energy. All of Colorado's 26 ski areas offer extensive recycling programs and are doing their part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with their public transportation systems.

Don't forget to eat green. Colorado ranks second in Certified Organic acreage. In addition, one quarter of the nation's Certified Organic acreage is located in the state. Not surprisingly, Colorado's restaurants and eateries staunchly support local farmers. At The Kitchen in Boulder (www.thekitchencafe.com) the chef can tell his patrons which Boulder farm provided organic cheese, produce and meat used in the creation of its meals. The restaurant also uses recycled wood tables and steel chairs, compostable straws and is 100 percent wind powered.

Colorado not only offers environmentally friendly places to dine and stay, but it also offers a number of educational programs and activities that allow visitors to enjoy an environmentally sound vacation. From global warming to renewable energy and environmental clean-up, Denver has emerged as one of the best places in the nation for "green" learning vacations. Visit The National Renewable Energy Lab (www.nrel.gov/overview), the nation's primary lab for research and development of renewable energy. The laboratory directly contributes to our nation's goal of finding new renewable ways to power our homes, businesses and cars. This research facility offers visitors guided tours and exhibits about the Earth's climate.

Rock Resorts' (www.rockresorts.com) Colorado properties, including the historic Hotel Jerome, The Pines Lodge, The Lodge & Spa at Cordillera or The Lodge at Vail, offer guests the opportunity to hike and participate in an environmental conservation project in the White River National Forest guided by U.S. Forest Service staff. In exchange for a visitor's time, Rock Resorts will provide them with discounted lodging, a durable hydration pack, protective work gloves and soothing hand lotion.

Colorado is home to 54 majestic "14ers" (14,000 ft. mountains), providing adventurous hikes, spiritual renewal and a chance for visitors to connect with nature. The Colorado Fourteeners Initiative (www.14ers.org) offers sustainable tourism programs that help to protect and preserve the natural integrity of these mountain peaks. Visiting hikers and nature enthusiasts can volunteer time and funds to assist with trail upkeep so future generations can enjoy Colorado's 14ers.

Colorado Via Rail: Exploring Colorado by Scenic and
 Historic Trains

Durango Silverton Train Fall

Travel back in time and explore Colorado's storied past on the state's 10 scenic and historic railroads. Below is a sampling of what visitors can expect to uncover:

  • The Pikes Peak Railway in Manitou Springs is the world's highest cog railroad. For 115 years it has taken passengers up 14,110 feet to the summit of Pikes Peak, the inspiration for the famed song "America the Beautiful" (www.cograilway.com).
  • The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (www.durangotrain.com) takes travelers back through the region's mining days on a 3,000 foot climb from Durango to Silverton where during the height of the gold rush, more than $300 million in gold and silver was discovered. This famous railway has been featured in many movies, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
  • The Royal Gorge Route Railroad (www.royalgorgeroute.com) in Cañon City runs along a valley floor surrounded by the 1,200-foot rock walls of the Royal Gorge. Keep your eyes upward on this ride and you'll see the highest suspension bridge in the world – the Royal Gorge Bridge.
  • Connecting Colorado and New Mexico, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad (www.cumbrestoltec.com) is the highest and longest narrow-gauge railway in the U.S. It travels along a breathtaking 64-mile route on the Colorado/New Mexico border, showcasing a varied and unique landscape.
  • Enjoy the beauty of Clear Creek Valley along the Georgetown Loop Railroad (www.georgetownlooprr.com). Passengers have the option to take in the fresh mountain air as they sit in open-air cars or they can enjoy the scenery through the windows of covered cars. Either way, they'll enjoy the ride over Devil's Gate Bridge, a trestle spanning the deep drop of a river carved canyon. This six-mile ride also includes an optional tour of the Lebanon Silver Mine.
  • Heading to Winter Park for a great weekend of skiing? Hop on board the Ski Train (www.skitrain.com). Departing from historic Union Station in downtown Denver, the Ski Train takes you through 27 tunnels in 25 miles on the way to Winter Park. Don't let the name fool you, the Ski Train runs during the summer months as well.
  • The Leadville & Southern Railroad (www.leadville-train.com) takes passengers over the Continental Divide and around the boomtown of Leadville, the highest incorporated city in the U.S. For two and a half hours, visitors ride the historic route and are given a history lesson of the miners and scenery associated with the area.
  • For a more modern train experience, Amtrak (www.amtrak.com) takes passengers over high mountain passes featuring scenic panoramas. The California Zephyr line travels roughly two-thirds of the way across the country, including through the heart of the Colorado Rockies.
  • The Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad (www.cripplecreekrailroad.com) takes you through Colorado's gold country. The 45 minute loop takes riders through a century of history of the once gold-frenzied town of Cripple Creek. Today, visitors can still strike it rich in Cripple Creek at one of the town's casinos.
  • Hop aboard the newly re-opened Rio Grande Scenic Railway (www.riograndescenicrailroad.com). The passenger route which closed in 1953 re-opened in 2006 and takes passengers on two trains out of the town of Alamosa – The Toltec Limited and the San Luis Express. Visitors break from their ride in the 1870s town of La Veta where they can spend the afternoon shopping and enjoying lunch before returning to Alamosa.

Looking for even more rail history? Visit one of Colorado's train museums, including the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden (www.crrm.org), the Forney Museum of Transportation in Denver (www.forneymuseum.org) and the Gunnison Pioneer & Train Museum (www.gunnisoncrestedbutte.com) in Gunnison. While there, let the knowledgeable and friendly staff answer all your locomotive questions.
