Pampered State: Colorado's Spas and Wellness in the Spotlight |
| |
|
In a state known for its adventure activities, is it any wonder that Colorado is home to scores of first-class spas where visitors can soothe sore muscles after a full day of skiing, whitewater rafting, mountain climbing, hiking or mountain biking? Colorado's range of hot springs and resorts, destination and day spas feature world-class facilities that introduce a refreshing focus on wellness. Whether your travels take you to a business meeting in Denver, the slopes of Colorado's 26 ski areas or the vineyards of the Lower Colorado River Valley, you'll find a soul-stirring experience in one of Colorado's spas.
Many spa experiences draw on Colorado's rich natural resources to introduce imaginative body and skin-care treatments, many featuring the state's indigenous ingredients. In Ridgway, the Chipeta Sun Lodge and Spa taps native pine, fir and cedar oils to detoxify and soothe, while in Telluride, the famed
Golden Door Spa at The Peaks specializes in treatments using ingredients found only in the Rockies. In Eagle, the Spa at Cordillera offers a High Altitude Rescue treatment designed to soothe the effect of mountain air on skin.
In Beaver Creek, the Park Hyatt's Allegria Spa recently unveiled a Roman-inspired Aqua Sanitas experience, a self-guided water ritual featuring hot mineral pools, cooling showers and aromatherapy pools. In Denver, the new Spa at the Brown Palace taps natural artesian water located 750 feet beneath the hotel for a range of hydrotherapy treatments, while in Colorado Springs, the therapeutic effects of water are revealed within the Spa at The Broadmoor's $100,000 Silver TAG Shower featuring 18 showerheads.

Mother Nature's Spa: Colorado's Hot Springs |
| |
|
The state boasts dozens of ultra-luxe destination spas, but for the truest taste of rustic relaxation, head for Colorado's hot springs. Celebrated for their high mineral content and resulting therapeutic qualities, these geothermal treasures are a welcome year-round respite from Colorado's high-energy adventures.
If the state's hot springs share one defining characteristic, it is spectacular natural beauty. The majority of Colorado's developed hot springs are located in the San Luis Valley, the San Juan Mountains, Clear Creek County and the Arkansas, Yampa and Colorado River Valleys. Several of the most interesting hot springs are also the least accessible — reached only after physically demanding hikes through spectacular peaks and wilderness reserves. Two of the most notable are Conundrum Hot Springs near Aspen (unmistakable for its views of six “fourteeners”) and Rainbow Hot Springs in the Weminuche Wilderness.
The world's largest improved hot springs pool is located on the Colorado River in Glenwood Springs. It measures two full blocks and features pools, waterslides, diving boards, even a tiny pool for little ones. The world's deepest hot mineral spring is found in Pagosa Springs, where 18 terraced hot springs are perched upon the banks of the San Juan River. |

Holiday Celebration at Bent's Old Fort in La Junta
Dec. 7–8, 2007
The spirit of the holiday season comes to life at Bent's Old Fort in La Junta, a reconstructed 1840's adobe fur trading post that is now a National Historic Site on the Mountain Branch of the Santa Fe Trail. It's where traders, trappers, travelers and Plains Indian tribes once gathered in peace for trade. Today, living historians invite visitors to step back in time, recreating the sights, sounds and scents of the past with guided tours, demonstrations and special events, including the delightful annual Holiday Celebration, scheduled Dec. 7–8. The Holiday Celebration at Bent's Old Fort captures the joys, pleasures and pastimes of a circa-1840's trading post at holiday time. Ideal for families, the two-day event features wagon rides, games, toy making, candlelight tours of the fort on Friday and Saturday evening and other holiday festivities.
