23rd ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF MOUNTAIN & PLAIN: A Taste of Colorado,

Make your way to the capitol city for Denver's end of summer celebration highlighting community spirit, diverse cultural and Western heritage, good eats and magnificent scenery. More than 500,000 people will join in the festivities sampling palate-pleasing entrees from more than 50 area restaurants, admiring the works of art from 280 talented artisans and vendors, and enjoying theatrical performances on seven different entertainment stages.

12th ANNUAL LOAF ‘N JUG CHILE & FRIJOLES FESTIVAL,
(www.pueblochamber.org) September 22–24, 2006:
Turn up the heat as Pueblo celebrates its home-grown chilies and pinto beans and pays tribute to the harvest of the Mira Sol Chile. Festival activities include cooking competitions featuring contestants' favorite green chile, red chile, salsa and bean recipes, fiery jalapeno eating contests, chile roasting, a farmers' market and a 5K Hot to Trot Fun Run. Peruse works of art from local artisans and craftsmen as you enjoy the sights and sounds of continuous live entertainment from blues, jazz, tejano and country style bands.

18th ANNUAL DURANGO COWBOY GATHERING,
(www.durangocowboygathering.org) October 5–8, 2006:
Join cowboys and cowgirls at the historic Strater Hotel in downtown Durango for a celebration honoring the rich culture and heritage of the American cowboy. Saddle up for poetry and musical numbers gracing the stages of the Diamond Circle Theatre during evening and daytime performances.

HAUNTED HAY RIDE,

Hold on tight for this memorable tractor-pulled hayride at Miller Farms in Platteville, located just between the northeastern Colorado hubs of Greeley and Fort Lupton. Winding through ghostly fields en route to a haunted corn maze, the ride is spooky at times with eerie and scary sights and sounds.

BOO AT THE ZOO,
(www.cmzoo.org; 719-633-9925) October 20–22 and 27–29, 2006:
It'll be all treats and tricks for your little ghouls and goblins at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs. The highest elevation zoo in the U.S., this Halloween celebration is fun and safe for the whole family. Round up the kids and collect sweet treats at dozens of spooky treat stations or visit with the zoo's giraffes, hippos, gorillas and orangutans as select animal exhibits also will be open. Don't forget to check out the creepy bat cave, lighted pumpkin path, magic shows and carnival games.

FIS WOMEN'S ALPINE WORLD CUP RACES,
(www.aspensnowmass.com) November 25–26, 2006:
Hold onto your ski hats as the fastest women in the world take to the slopes of Aspen Mountain to compete in downhill races in the Giant Slalom and Slalom during Aspen’s Winternational celebration. After the action, the festivities heat up with an outdoor concert pumping tunes into downtown, followed by a brilliant display of fireworks.

GOLD CAMP CHRISTMAS HEADFRAME LIGHTING,
(www.victorcolorado.com; 719-689-2675) November 25–26, 2006:
Look on high as giant head frames, remnants of the1890's gold mining days, light up the night sky around Victor and Cripple Creek this holiday season. Mining artifacts from the golden era, these holiday ornaments, some as large as 20 feet long, will sport festive Christmas lights and mark the beginning of the Noel season. Make a reservation at one of the area hotels and take a tour of area gold mines or enjoy a traditional holiday performance at the Butte Opera House.
